From regular-season rivalries to the Stanley Cup Playoffs, NHL viewing in the United States is divided between local broadcasts, national networks, and streaming services.
NHL Power Play on ESPN covers eligible out-of-market games. Your local team’s broadcasts and nationally exclusive matchups can require different access. The right service depends on where you live and which game you want to watch.
Mytvapp explains hockey viewing options, blackout restrictions, device support, and playback problems. It is an independent information website and does not host live NHL streams.
Where Can You Watch NHL Games?
Local coverage serves a team’s television territory, while out-of-market coverage serves eligible viewers outside that area.
| Game or Coverage Type | Relevant Viewing Option |
|---|---|
| Eligible out-of-market regular-season games | NHL Power Play through ESPN Select or ESPN Unlimited |
| Your local team’s regional broadcasts | The team’s local television or streaming provider |
| Games carried by ESPN or ABC | Eligible television-provider access or ESPN Unlimited |
| Selected national hockey coverage | TNT and HBO Max |
| Recorded games and hockey analysis | The relevant provider’s replay and on-demand library |
A package with several sports channels may still miss a streaming exclusive. Likewise, an out-of-market subscription may not carry your local team live.
What Is NHL Power Play?
NHL Power Play is ESPN’s out-of-market NHL offering. It is included with ESPN Select and ESPN Unlimited, with blackout restrictions.
It suits fans who follow teams outside their local broadcast territory. It does not remove local restrictions or automatically include every nationally exclusive game.
Home and Away Commentary
NHL Power Play offers home and away broadcast choices for its games. These feeds let viewers follow different commentary teams covering the same matchup.
Choosing another commentary feed does not change your location or remove a blackout.
Replays and On-Demand Hockey
Replay coverage lets you watch after a game has finished. It is useful when you miss the opening faceoff or want to revisit a particular matchup. ESPN also provides hockey studio programming and analysis. A discussion show, highlight package, and full-game replay are different types of content.
ESPN Select vs. ESPN Unlimited for Hockey
Both plans include NHL Power Play, but ESPN Unlimited also provides access to games carried on ESPN and ABC. ESPN Select includes the ESPN+ content library. It should not be treated as access to every program on ESPN’s television channels.
| Feature | ESPN Select | ESPN Unlimited |
|---|---|---|
| NHL Power Play out-of-market coverage | Included, subject to restrictions | Included, subject to restrictions |
| ESPN+ hockey programming | Included | Included |
| Live ESPN and ABC hockey coverage through the plan | Not included simply through Select | Included |
| Local blackout restrictions | Still apply | Still apply |
A higher subscription tier adds coverage and features. It does not automatically remove the league’s local broadcast restrictions.
Can You Watch NHL Games on HBO Max?
HBO Max carries selected NHL games through its live sports coverage. Live sports is included with its Standard and Premium plans, with plan availability depending on the subscription provider.
HBO Max also provides NHL replays. Its hockey coverage is a selected schedule, not every local and out-of-market game. Location-based blackout restrictions can apply, even when your plan includes live sports.
Local Games and Blackouts Explained
An NHL blackout means a provider cannot show a particular game live in your location under the applicable broadcast rights.
Your nearby team may be covered by a local broadcaster rather than the out-of-market package. National exclusivity can also affect availability. A blackout is different from buffering. The player may load correctly, your account may be active, and your connection may be stable while the live game remains restricted.
Why Is My Team Blacked Out During an Away Game?
Local restrictions can apply whether your team plays at home or away. The relevant factor is your viewing location within the team’s broadcast territory. Traveling to another city may also change the restrictions applied to your device.
NHL Coverage Throughout the Season
Regular-Season Hockey
Regular-season games determine standings and playoff qualification. Coverage includes local broadcasts, nationally selected matchups, and eligible out-of-market games. Fans following one team may need different viewing options when its schedule moves between regional and national broadcasts.
Stanley Cup Playoffs
Playoff coverage follows national broadcast arrangements rather than simply continuing every regular-season local feed. A subscription used for out-of-market regular-season hockey should not be assumed to include every playoff game live.
Stanley Cup Final
TNT is the US television home of the 2027 Stanley Cup Final. HBO Max also lists the 2027 Final in its sports coverage. This is a season-specific arrangement. The championship broadcaster can differ from the service you use for ordinary regular-season games.
Watching NHL Games on Your Devices
Playback depends on the viewing provider’s supported devices and your account’s access.
| Device | How Viewing Usually Works |
|---|---|
| Phone or tablet | Through the provider’s supported app |
| Windows or Mac computer | Through compatible browser playback |
| Smart TV | Through a supported television app |
| Streaming stick or box | Through the provider’s app for that device |
| Casting setup | Through a supported casting feature and receiving device |
HBO Max supports live sports on its supported devices and offers Chromecast and AirPlay options. A television having a browser does not guarantee compatibility with a computer-based video player. Device model, software version, and provider support all matter.
NHL Stream Not Working? Common Fixes
The Video Keeps Buffering
Buffering means the player is waiting for more video data. Lower the picture quality, pause large downloads, and move closer to your Wi-Fi router.
For compatible television devices, a wired connection can reduce interruptions caused by weak Wi-Fi. If several services struggle, your network may be responsible. If only one game stops repeatedly, the provider may be experiencing a broadcast-delivery problem.
There Is No Sound
Unmute the player and raise the device volume. Confirm that audio is going to the intended speakers rather than Bluetooth headphones or another output. On a computer, also check whether the browser tab is muted.
The Service Asks You to Subscribe Again
Sign into the account connected to your original purchase. Another email address may open an account without your subscription. If your access comes through a television provider, the streaming app may require that provider’s sign-in rather than a separate purchase.
The Game Shows a Blackout Message
A genuine blackout requires the appropriate authorized broadcast, not a faster connection. If your location is being identified incorrectly, contact the viewing provider’s support team. A location-detection error and a valid blackout are different issues.
